iPad – Hit or Miss?

Now that the actual iPad specifications are out, what is your opinion of this new device? Is it a stripped down Mac that is basically a fancy netbook, or is it a beefed up iPhone that will bridge mobile device and personal computer? Maybe something else entirely? I would love to hear your thoughts.

Personally, I will be doing what I always do with all new tech; sitting back and let the early adopters shake out the bugs.

iPad – Tablet Speculation Over

I admit it.  I am totally geeking out today and following the Apple announcement of the new tablet device live on the internet.  Leo Laport is there live with his phone, laptop and Skype broadcasting on Ustream.  I am also following on Engadget.com to get a breakdown in pictures. It fells like I was watching a news broadcast from the 50’s or 60’s when the announcer would describe the event while random pictures flashed on the screen.

Looking forward to bringing you details later.

iPhone Unleashed?

The great thing about Apple is there is always an interesting rumor floating around about an upcoming gadget or event. As I noted in an earlier post, Apple is rumored to announce a new tablet device based on its popular iPhone format. Now it is rumored that Apple will halt it’s exclusive partnership with AT&T.

A post today on Apple Insider reported that another site, HotHardware.com, has information from an “anonymous inside source” that AT&T will lose their iPhone exclusivity on Wednesday, when Apple is also expected to introduce its long-awaited touchscreen tablet. The article indicate that AT&T may lose it stranglehold on the service for the device, it is also tired of the iPhone being a data-hog and continually causing problems to the cell provider’s network. Since the sources are anonymous, please read the articles yourself and make your own decisions (Apple InsiderHotHardware.com).

Even if all of the rumors are wrong, you have to admit that Steve Jobs and the folks at Apple are always keeping people guessing about what’s next. I know I will be watching the announcements closely.

Nook – Another E-book Reader.

Barnes and Nobles' nookBarnes & Noble’s has just introduced the “nook,” a new e-book reader to go alongside Amazon’s Kindle and Sony’s Reader. This new device sports a 6 inch E-ink screen and a color touchscreen to navigate content. According to preliminary information, the “nook” weighs 1 ounce more than a Kindle and has a battery life less than that of the Amazon device. However, it does offer the ability to play MP3 files through its built-in speaker.

The one feature that Barnes & Noble’s is touting most, is the ability of “nook” owners to share e-books based purchased. Copies of purchased books can be sent to friends who have installed the “nook” eReader software on their PC, Mac, iPhone, iPod or other selected device.

OnStar to the Rescue.

onstar-logo1Imagine sitting in your car, minding your own business, when along comes a gun toting thief ordering you to hand over the keys. That happened to José Ruiz, age 33, of Lindsay California. But instead of worrying, he allowed the gunman to take the 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe knowing that his OnStar system from GM would allow authorities to recover the vehicle.

More than just reporting the vehicle’s location, a new feature of the system allowed operators at General Motors’ command center to send a message to the vehicle that brought it to a slow stop. This allowed police officers to safely apprehend the thief and return the vehicle to Mr. Ruiz.

Apple Investors Riding High.

apple-logoYesterday’s post talked about how technology companies might lead the economy out of the economic recession. And in line with that, Apple computers (APPL) reported higher than expected earnings. Much like IBM and AMD, these better than expected returns are due to higher demand for laptop computers, iPods and iPhones.

Surprisingly, the number of iPhone’s was lower than expected. However, analysts say that is due to the fact that Apple could not keep up with demand for a large portion of the quarter.

Many on Wall Street think that Apple is poised to do even better over the coming year. This is based on the opening of China to the iPhone and anticipated new products such as a netbook and tablet computer

Sony Challenges Kindle

Sony New E-Book

Sony New E-Book

Starting December of 2009, Sony will offer an e-book reader poised to challenge the popular Kindle from Amazon.  The new device will offer a 7″ touch screen and will allow users to download books, newspapers and magazines via AT&T’s cellular network. The new device will retail for $399.

Today, Sony started selling two e-book reader versions. A 5″ model “Pocket Reader” for $199 and a larger version with a touch screen for $299. NOTE: neither of the models currently on sale offer wireless downloads. To refresh content the reader must be connected to a computer.

Sony, on the other hand, has committed to an open e-book standard, meaning its Readers can show copy-protected books from a variety of stores, and the books can be moved to and read on a variety of devices, including cell phones.

Sony also announced Tuesday that the Readers will be able to load e-books “loaned” from local libraries. A library card will provide access to free books that expire after 21 days. Click here for the AP article.

Will the open standard and ability to “borrow” give Sony an advantage over Amazon’s Kindle? Only time will tell.
