Win Friends & Influence People

Recently I have been re-listening to my copy of Dale Carnegie’s book “How to Win Friends & Influence People.”  I’ve always considered the material to hold some important basic truths about how to do exactly what the title suggests.  What Carnegie lays out are very simple basic ideas that most of us don’t know or don’t bother to use.

I may be in the minority, but I find the writing style to be a long winded with too many examples.  My bias may come from the fact that I agree with what he is saying and I don’t need to be convinced.  I thought it would be a great idea if I created a summary of the book’s points that I could look at every day.  Lucky me, someone else already thought of that.  Here is the link.

Who do you read or listen to for business inspiration? Brain Tracy, Earl Nightingale, Og Mandino, Anthony Robbins?

Free Stuff for Entrepreneurs

When you are the owner of a small business, it’s always nice to get something for free.  Intuit, the makers of Quicken, QuickBooks and other business software, is offering free incorporation and Limited Liability Company (LLC) services through July 31.  You can get these free services at their web site www.mycorporation.com.

Since it’s free, it would be worth investigating if you are starting your own business or have your own business that is not yet incorporated or established a LLC.  Some states have streamlined the process making it very easy to do yourself online.  That is exactly what I did.

However, these types of software do not replace good legal or accounting advise.  As an attorney, I was comfortable in doing this myself through my state’s web site.  If you are unsure about this process yourself or unaware abouth the different ways Corporations, S Corps and LLCs are taxed and what type of protections each entity offers, be sure to see a qualified  attorney and/or accountant.

Intuit also offers entrepreneurs other free products, such as QuickBooks Simple Start and Intuit Websites, to help them start and grow their businesses.  Check out their other web site for details www.smallbusinessunited.com.

Settlement In Heath Ledger’s Case

LOS ANGELES – An agreement has been reached in a lawsuit involving Heath Ledger’s $10 million life insurance policy.

The confidential settlement was revealed in court documents filed Wednesday in Los Angeles. Ledger’s attorneys are seeking a closed hearing next month to establish a court guardian to represent the actor’s 3-year-old daughter, Matilda Rose, who is the policy’s beneficiary.

An attorney for Ledger sued ReliaStar Life Insurance Co. last year, claiming the company was refusing to pay the actor’s death benefits. The attorney claimed the insurer was refusing to pay because it wanted to investigate whether Ledger’s death was a suicide.

A coroner ruled Ledger’s death last January was from an accidental prescription drug overdose.

William Shernoff, who represented Ledger’s attorney, said Thursday that both sides were pleased with the settlement. He declined to discuss specifics of the deal.

Incentives to Teach Financial Literacy

Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson wants the government to reward financial institutions, small businesses and corporations for providing financial education for customers and employees.

Johnson, D-Texas, has introduced H.R. 767, the National Financial Literacy Act, a bill that would amend the Community Reinvestment Act to allow banking institutions to receive credit for offering community-based financial literacy programs.

The bill would provide tax breaks for small businesses that offer free financial education, and it would provide preferential treatment in government contracting for corporations that work to increase financial literacy.

Qualified community-based financial literacy programs could cover topics such as retirement planning, estate planning and long term care planning, according to the bill text.   Article Source – National Underwriter.
